Discovering International Business: My Journey to Supply Chain Specialization
Why International Business?
I’m pursuing a degree in International Business with a specialization in Supply Chain Management. My interest in business started back in high school, but I was still uncertain about my next steps after leaving at 17. After some reflection, I realized I wanted to study in English and embrace the diverse cultures I would encounter along the way. One of my friends mentioned studying IB in Arnhem, and I knew instantly it was the perfect fit for me.
Why I Chose HAN
Living close to HAN made it an attractive option, and after hearing positive feedback from friends, I was convinced this was the right place for me. The international atmosphere and diverse course offerings have made my experience enriching and fulfilling.
Don’t be afraid to talk to your fellow students—everyone’s been in the same position, and sharing knowledge can make your journey much smoother!
Making the Most of Electives and Specializations
Exploring Electives
Throughout my studies, I’ve taken several electives, including Spanish 1-4, Gamification, Brand Strategy and Design, Excel, and Get Hired! Among these, I particularly enjoyed Gamification because it allowed me to be creative and immerse myself in the project. Spanish was also a favourite, although the fast-paced theory sometimes made it challenging for me as someone with dyslexia. Despite this, I enjoyed the process and learned a lot!
The Value of Specialization
Supply Chain Management (SCM) appealed to me because of its focus on optimization, risk reduction, and sustainability within business operations. I especially liked the Lean Six Sigma course, where we participated in real-world simulations to optimize supply chains. The hands-on learning style really clicked with me, though I realized I might switch to Marketing and Sales in the future, as that’s where my true passion lies.
Advice for Future Students
For anyone considering IB at HAN, my advice is to talk to senior students—they have valuable insights and can guide you through your studies. Start your projects early, as this reduces stress and gives you more time to explore opportunities, such as attending interviews or networking. Also, don’t underestimate the importance of group work; strong communication is key to success!
